In My Own Words...
My name is Chrystal Faye James. I am half
Navajo and half Isleta. I was born in Shiprock,
New Mexico, where I lived for 2 years. Since
then my family has moved around a lot, but
I spent the majority of my life growing up
in Santa Fe.
I graduated from Chemawa Indian High School,
a Native American boarding school located
in rainy Salem, Oregon. It was a great experience
for me because I met and made friends with
many other Natives from across the country.
I went on to receive my Associates in Architectural
Drafting in Phoenix, Arizona, where I lived
and worked for 4 years before deciding to
move to St. Louis, Missouri to be close to
my fiancé's family. My beautiful son was born there. After my son's birth, I realized how much I wanted
him to know about and grow up around his culture,
something that he couldn't receive living
in the city. That's what has brought me back
home to my family, showing me that there is
truly no place like home.
An added bonus to my home coming was being
offered an opportunity to work at Dyron Murphy
Architects. I love the fact that I'm able
to give back to my community and help my fellow
Natives by developing ways to make life a
little easier and joyful for them.
