- Thoreau Middle School Dedication - Thursday, August 25, 2011
Congratulations to Thoreau Middle School, on the dedication of their new building.
“Yá’ át’ ééh abini, welcome dignitaries, staff and students to our new school”, touted Principal Alberta Nozie.
The 2011-12 school year began with a dedication conducted by Mr. Leonard Haskie (Gallup-McKinley County Schools) and Navajo Language teacher Mr. Gary Vandever who sang four Navajo songs (Sa'ah Naagháí Bik'eh Hózhóón) as the students Michael Martinez (6th), Allura Swimmer (7th) and Demarco Pierce (8th) blessed their school with corn pollen to the east, south, west and north.
Superintendent Ray Arsenault also addressed the gathering, stating Gallup-McKinley County School District continues to provide improved educational facilities for the district and more projects are forthcoming.
This is the third school project that Dyron Murphy Architects, P.C. has completed for Gallup-McKinley County Schools. This project included interim campus upgrades, demolition, renovation and new construction. The new school is 48,320 square feet, and includes new classrooms, specialty rooms, administration, health, cafeteria and a gymnasium.
Thoreau Middle School has been a team effort between Gallup-McKinley County School District, Public School Facilities Authority, Dyron Murphy Architects, P.C., Murphy Builders and school representatives who engaged in the Educational Specification process.
- Institute of American Indian Arts Admin Building Design Awarded to DMA!
The Institute of American Indian Arts (IAIA) Admin Building project was awarded to Dyron Murphy Architects, P.C. in August. DMA has worked with IAIA on several projects in the past, and is excited to be working with this prestigous client once again. The new building will house the Administrative department of the school, and allow for additional classroom and studio space in the area where the department is currently housed. This project will be a LEED certified project.

Rough Rock Community School Grand Opening
Rough Rock Community School hosted the grand opening of their new Kindergarden-8th Grade Academic Building on August 15, 2011, presented by Mr. Larry Echohawk, Assistant Secretary for Indian Affairs, Mr. Emerson Eskeets, Division of Design and Construction Chief, OFMC, and numberous school board members.
The new 58,325 square foot Elementary/ Middle School accommodates 215 students and is divided into wings to separate younger and older students. The building also houses a gymnasium and cafeteria, which were designed to host both school and community functions.
Dyron Murphy Architects, P.C. worked with the school to ensure that the new building enhances the learning environment for its' students and promotes Navajo Culture. The design reflects elements of Diné culture including a main entrance that faces East and use of the colors from the four Sacred Mountains.
The project is pursuing LEED Silver certification.
