Beclabito Day School’s motto is the “learning place in New Mexico”, which reflects its outstanding education program and performance.

This 32,991 square foot elementary replacement school is located in a remote and beautiful northern part of the Navajo Nation. The Navajo Nation Design and Engineering Services is administering the project through funding from the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA).

Beclabito means “hidden water”, and our school design is inspired and informed by the mountain springs that flow though and under this land. Dyron Murphy Architects, P.C. designed the site and building plan with a metaphor of “flowing water”, water that is moving through our building and throughout the site.

The horizontal “flowing water” landscape elements pass in and out of the school, acting as an organizing theme, gathering in some areas for the community, and moving in other areas with thick curved walls, paved cobblestone walks, and plants that match Beclabito topography. The building’s vertical forms draw inspiration from the Chuska mountain peaks that are close and directly to the West, and the large flat rock buttress that punctuates and borders on the East, with Shiprock very faint in the distance.
