Consolidated School
Prewitt, New Mexico
Dyron Murphy, Principal-In-Charge
Greg Comer, Project Manager
This $10.4 million, 79,000 square foot school
involved a compressed design and construction
schedule. The United States Corps of Engineers
(USCOE) managed the project in collaboration with
the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA).
No costly change orders were issued during the
initial construction period, thus contingency
funds allocated by the USCOE remained unspent.
They were later spent on improvements, including
funds allocated to help this school become the
first LEED certified "green" building
in New Mexico.
The school was designed to symbolically incorporate
many elements of Navajo Dine culture, including
functions and colors associated with the Circle
of Life. The main entry faces east toward Mt.
Taylor, which is one of the four sacred mountains
for the Dine people. Other design elements address
the four sacred directions. The four separate
wings of the building revolve around the central
core. The spaces between building elements are
landscaped with native plants, create and an interplay
between the manmade and natural worlds.
