Hopi
Cultural Center Renovation & Addition
Second Mesa, Arizona
Dyron Murphy, Principal-in-Charge
The Hopi Cultural Center Renovation and Addition
project was originally scheduled to be a renovation
of the existing commercial kitchen, however, in
the course of design and facility assessment,
it was determined that total replacement is in
the best interests of the Owner, the Hopi Cultural
Center Enterprises, Inc. The kitchen is a full
commercial kitchen, expected to handle full service
restaurant meals: breakfast, lunch, dinner, banquet
events and carryout meals. In addition, our design
included 19 new hotel rooms, two story in structure,
with guest rooms for standard, ADA (handicap),
and large suites. All design was carefully detailed
to reflect the unique identity of the Hopi people.
Dyron Murphy Architects, PC was the Architect
of Record for this project in association with
Dekker/Perich/Sabatini Architecture of Albuquerque,
and worked with Leadley Design Services (Equipment),
ArSed Engineering Group, Inc. (Mechanical), and
Allied Engineering & Design, Inc. (Electrical).
Dyron Murphy Architects specified special interior
finishes, e.g., slip resistant flooring, PVC wall
coverings, and stainless steel protective coverings
where high-impact conditions will occur due to
mobile equipment.
The kitchen design included office space for
a head cook, receiving area, dry storage, banquet
prep area, supply storage, staff restrooms and
shower facilities, and receiving dock area. The
kitchen equipment design included commercial kitchen
equipment, designed directly with the restaurant's
cook to meet the demands of a very busy restaurant
operation.
