Shiprock Multipurpose Center
& Masterplan
Shiprock, New Mexico
Dyron Murphy, Principal-in-Charge
The Shiprock Multi-Purpose Center Complex(MPCC)
is being developed with a focus on the social,
physiological, and spiritual needs of the Four
Corners Region. The underlying concept of the
facility is to provide coordinated, "one-stop"
services to "at-risk" Navajo youth.
The center will provide programs and services
aimed at community empowerment and enrichment.
This facility was designed with a focus on the
needs of the community. The underlying concept
of the facility is to provide the community with
a safe and secure internal and external environment
that is usable year-round . This is accomplished
by creating a courtyard area with a amphitheatre,
which is protected by the surrounding buildings.
At the east entrance into the courtyard there
is a native garden that serves as a learning tool
in order to introduce youth to traditional plants
and their importance to Navajo culture.
The site and the facility are contemporary in
spirit, mindful of tradition, and sensitive to
the cultural heritage and uniqueness of San Juan
region. The project embodies an evolving, ever-changing
cycle of life and growth through the use of technological
and innovative environmental design. The entire
site also addresses and is responsive to the adjacent
properties.
The facility is designed to be LEED compliant.
Dyron Murphy Architects has completed the Design
Development phase, with subsequent phases subject
to available funding.
